Managing Expectations (II)
"Then Peter began to say to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You.”So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.” (NKJV) Mark 10:28-30
Peter’s question was honest—what is the reward for following Jesus? Many who sacrifice for God’s kingdom wonder the same. Jesus assured Peter that God’s blessings are real, both in this life and in eternity. But He also warned that the journey comes with challenges.
In parts of the world, believers have lost homes, jobs, and relationships for their faith. Yet, they often find a new family in Christ, unexpected provision, and divine peace. God’s rewards are not only material; they include strength in trials, joy in suffering, and purpose beyond worldly success.
Consider a farmer who plants a crop. He does not see an immediate harvest but waits, knowing the reward will come in due season (James 5:7-8). Similarly, walking with Christ means trusting God’s timing. Some blessings come now, some later—but the greatest gift is eternal life.
Rather than dwelling on what we might receive, we should rest in the assurance that God’s provision is always perfect and timely. Whatever we give up for His sake, He will restore beyond measure—in this life or the life to come (1 Corinthians 15:58). Our best expectation? A future secured in the Lord Jesus.
