Spiritual Warfare

Written by Alfred Ofori Agyemang.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (NIV) Ephesians 6:12

Good morning! As we wake up today, we must be mindful that we are engaged in spiritual warfare. The Christian life is not just a journey of peace and blessings; it is also a battle against forces that seek to derail our faith and purpose. This warfare is not fought with physical weapons but through spiritual means and knowing this equips us to be victorious.

Recognize that we are in warfare. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil. Ignoring the reality of spiritual warfare leaves us vulnerable, but acknowledging it enables us to put on the full armour of God and stand firm.

Identify the enemy's location in battle. Our spiritual enemies are not always visible; they operate in unseen realms, often influencing circumstances and people around us. Yet, through prayer and discernment, the Holy Spirit gives us clarity to see where the enemy works in our lives, communities, and environments. This awareness helps us guard our hearts and minds against the enemy's subtle attacks.

Assess what the enemy possesses. Just like in a physical war, it's important to know what resources the enemy has. Whether it’s education, influence, or material resources, the enemy often uses tools like deception, fear, and distraction to attack. However, our greatest resource is God Himself, who supplies us with divine wisdom, strength, and the support of fellow believers.

Understand the enemy's strengths and weaknesses. Satan is cunning and relentless, but he is not all-powerful. Jesus has already defeated him through the cross. His main strength is deception—if he can convince us to believe lies, he gains a foothold. Yet his weakness is that he has no authority over those who stand firmly in Christ. The Bible says in James 4:7, "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

Know the enemy's pattern of operations. The devil is a creature of habit. He often attacks in moments of weakness, through familiar temptations or in times of doubt. Once we recognize these patterns, we can tactically prepare ourselves through scripture, prayer, and worship. The more we know, the better we can stand on guard and not be taken by surprise.

In all, remember that victory is assured through Jesus Christ. Jesus has never lost a battle, and in Him, we are more than conquerors. Though we may face trials, attacks, and opposition, we do not fight alone. The Lord goes before us, and with His guidance, we can overcome every scheme of the enemy. Let us enter this day with confidence in the Lord, ready to stand firm, knowing that in Jesus, we have already won the victory in our spiritual warfare. Amen!
