The measuring line
"On the appointed day, Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. They shouted, 'This is the voice of a god, not of a man.'" (NIV) Acts 12:21-22
In today’s world, truth is often treated as subjective, changing to fit personal preferences. But in reality, spiritual absolutes can only be defined by God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16). It is the divine measuring line, establishing boundaries for our good and guiding us in life and godliness (Psalm 119:105, 2 Peter 1:3).
King Herod failed to recognize this truth. He accepted praise meant for God, contrary to God's decree on such matters (Isaiah 48:2). His arrogance had consequences—he was struck down and died because he failed to give God the honor due Him (Acts 12:21-23). His story serves as a reminder that playing God leads to destruction —it is total disobedience.
A young engineer once ignored precise building measurements while designing a bridge. When the structure collapsed, lives were lost. Devastated, he realized that disregarding the right standards had dire consequences. In the same way, when we dismiss God's Word as our guide, we risk building our lives on a faulty foundation (Proverbs 14:12).
God’s Word is unchanging, perfect, and true (Proverbs 30:5-6, John 17:17). Those who build their lives upon it find stability and purpose. May we submit to His divine standard and measure life’s dealings by His word.
