Mightier Still

Bible Reading: Psalm 93

Storms can be dangerous and awesome to watch at the same time. The raw power in a storm is fascinating. Humans generally are in awe of power. Power can immobilize us. In situations where we would normally feel free to act, we might freeze when something powerful is in the way. Power can also make us feel powerless/helpless. "What can I do against such a force?" is not an uncommon question.

Jesus is asleep as the disciples find themselves in a storm. Experienced fishermen feel like the situation is out of control. "Master, don't you care that we are going to perish?" (Mark 4:38)

Jesus commands the wind and the waves to be silent and calm. The disciples were afraid of the storm, but they are more afraid of the power in Jesus (Mark 4:41).

"Who is this that even the wind and waves obey him?"

The Psalmist tells us that the everlasting King is mightier than the roaring waters and the mightiest of waves. The Lord is the One who is armed with strength (Psalm 93).

As we face powerful forces in the world, we always remember that the One we call Lord is mightier still. The Good News? He is on our side!
