Reputational Equity

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

"Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold" (NLT) Proverbs 22:1

Recently, one of the leading retail companies in UK employed me to join their team to process online orders of their customers. In these difficult times when a lot of people have been furloughed from their jobs and some permanently laid off, I am grateful to God for this opportunity.

This company employed me upon the recommendation of an employment agency I worked for last year with another company. My former company in a way breached the employment contract because they reduced my wages twice. The employment agency did its best to get that company to do the right thing, but the manager blatantly refused. In all these I prayed to God to keep my heart from being bitter from this experience. The recruitment manager from the employment agency was impressed with my cool, calm and collected attitude.

You see, I could have lost my cool and condescend to the level of this company that tried to rip me off. But my guiding principle was that God was preparing something bigger and better for me in the future. I could have taken legal action against them, but I thought about how it might implicate the employment agency and how that will impair my relationship with them.

Some few months down the line, that decision I took to let go and let God has given birth to another opportunity. In the world of work, a powerful recommendation from a superior can be the game-changer for you and it all depends on your reputation. To maintain a good name may mean that you may be treated badly by some at times. But in the end, the Good Lord will recompense you. A good name indeed is better than riches.
