The Secret of Walking with God

Written by Sandra Essel.

Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. (NIV) Genesis 5:24

Bible reading: Genesis 5:21-24

From the beginning of creation, God had an intimate relationship with Adam and Eve: in the cool of the day, God was walking in the garden to look for them (Gen 3:8-9). God created man to have a continuous fellowship with Him. Despite the sin of Adam and Eve that broke the relationship between God and man, God in His wisdom sent down His only begotten son to die and restore our relationship with Him (John 3:16).

Enoch was the first man mentioned in the Bible to "walk with God", although, in the early days' many people began to call upon the name of the Lord (Gen 4:26). Enoch was the man to unveil the immense riches of walking with God. I believe he found something extraordinary that even Adam did not experience. He sought for God until he learned how to commune with Him in every aspect of his life. To find such an intimate relationship with God, Enoch had to pursue a consistent fellowship and commitment to God. This pleased God such that He took Enoch to heaven.

God took up Enoch to heaven not to impress us of His mighty works, but He wanted to highlight how He values and desires to walk with us in our daily lives. Enoch lived 365 years and walked 300 years with God (Gen 5:22). Looking at these numbers of years and his intimate relationship with God, imagine the deep secrets and glorious things Enoch uncovered. Perhaps, God could not withstand than to take him up seeing how Enoch’s heart longs for Him.

Brethren, as we continue to walk with God, we may not be taken up directly to heaven as Enoch, but I believe that through His spirit, He shall open scriptures to us and reveal to us His glory, riches and the deep secrets of His kingdom. Noah knew the secret of walking with God (Gen 6:5-8) as well as Abraham (Gen 24:40). Believers, through Christ Jesus, we can explore more of the glorious riches of drawing closer to God like our forefathers did and even to a greater height because of His Spirit that dwells in us. God bless you.
