Responding to God's Word

Written by Myles MacMillan.

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." (NIV) Romans 12:1-2

It isn’t hard to look at our lives and see the many ways in which God has blessed us. We are all greatly blessed when it comes to spiritual things. Romans 8:32 says: “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (NIV). God has blessed each and every human being on this earth with the sacrifice of Jesus, His son. We all have the opportunity to take Him as our saviour and inherit eternal life with Him.

In light of this amazing gift, what is next? Do we just say “thank-you” and move on with our lives? Certainly not! What a waste that would be. The gift of Jesus (and any other gift from God for that matter) should cause us to respond. Romans 12:1-2 tells us to respond to God’s mercy by offering ourselves to Him as a living sacrifice. This means we dedicate our lives to Him because of everything He has done for us. Verse 2 says that we should be transformed by the renewing of our minds. If we want to make these changes we need to know how God wants us to live and for that we need to turn to the Bible.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (NIV). As you reflect on all that God has done for you physically and more importantly, spiritually, I encourage you to respond to those gifts. Maybe you are not yet a Christian - the time is now to start reading the bible to find out how you can commit your life to Him. Maybe you are a believer but haven’t been much of a living sacrifice and are not transforming your life in the way God wants. I encourage everyone to make God’s Word a top priority in 2020. He has done so much for us, we all need to study His Word carefully and look for ways that we can respond by transforming our lives for Him.
