Living with the Spirit – Part 1

Written by Myles MacMillan.

"The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us." (NIV) 1 Corinthians 2:10b-12

Understanding another person can be a challenging task. In society, people often put on a show, masquerading their true self and their true thoughts for the sake of acting the part and in many ways, this is a regular human behaviour. In the same vein, we can understand that an individual person is the only one who knows exactly what is going on in their own mind. The person may try to explain themselves to others with words and actions, but sometimes certain things cannot be properly explained with written or spoken words.

1 Corinthians 2 speaks about the Spirit of God and how He “searches” the “deep things of God” the Greek word for “search” means “examine into” (see John 7:52). The Spirit of God has examined into the heart of God and knows what lies therein. Just as our spirit is the only one who knows our thoughts, the Spirit of God is the only being that knows the inner mind of God. The amazing part for us as Christians is that we have the Spirit of God dwelling inside us for Acts 2:38 says “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

1 Corinthians 2:12 also agrees that we have received “the Spirit who is from God”. Isn’t this amazing? If we connect the dots we can see that, as Christians, we have special access to “the deep things of God” because we have His Spirit living inside of us! Verse 12 says that His Spirit will help us understand “what God has freely given us” and He has indeed given us so much. Stay tuned for the next devotional where we will look at how we should respond to this glorious gift.
