Contentment is godliness

Written by Kingsley Tsonyake.

"But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (KJV) 1 Timothy 6:6-10

Dear brethren, I write this piece to remind us of Paul’s letter to Timothy calling on us to be content with what we have. I reckon with the fact that the economic hardship in the world is having a tone on us to the extent that many of us have little time for God. But you will all agree with me that this is where true Christianity comes into play; to be able to trade your own interest for the call of God.

The necessaries of life bound a true Christian's desires, and with these, he will endeavour to be content. Let us note verse 10 of the scriptural reference; “For the love of money is the root of all evil...” Take note of the verb "LOVE". This is to let us know that, money is not evil but the LOVE of it. People may have money, and yet not love it; but if they love it, this will push them to do all kinds of evil. Every sort of wickedness, in one way or another, grows from the love of money.

Let me share with you what a good friend of mine, Lee Baiden once wrote. Please think about it.

“There is no first, we each have varying destiny,

There is no last, just consummation of one's call,

There is no perfect, just commitment to one's duty,

There is no gain, just what heaven has for all;

Stop hurrying and struggling as the years go and come -There is true life somewhere beyond here - some true home!”
