What do you desire for?

Written by Philip Addo Bempong.

"One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple." (NKJV) Psalm 27:4

It was my desire since childhood to stand before an audience to give a speech or teach, though a very shy person because I desperately wanted this, I worked hard towards it, and achieved it.

Desire is a strong feeling of wanting to have or do something. Whatever you desire for, good or bad, helpful or unhelpful, if worked at diligently, it can be accomplished. In Genesis 11, we read of the tower of Babel which some people desired to build, it wasn't right in the eyes of the Lord but since they were working hard in harmony towards it, God said: "now nothing that they propose or desire to do will be withheld from them".

We all have what we desire for, and so we work so hard and try to get or attain and we even break some principles of God which were never meant to be faulted, just in the name of our desire. What then do you desire for in this world as a Christian and a child of God? Is it earthly or worldly wealth? Is it worldly power? To be a prominent person? Or Is it spiritual matters as the psalmist said?

Jesus, as the finisher of our faith, desired for heavenly things and so we are admonished to do same (Hebrews 12:1-2}. The Apostle Paul in Philippines 3:12 desiring eternal crown writes, "Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me." In 2 Timothy 4:6-8, Apostle Paul then shares the results of his desire to press on.

"For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." Paul also admonishes Christians to desire for things in heaven in Colossians 3:1-4, "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

Are you desiring for heavenly things? Stay blessed
