God, help us number our days

“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (NIV) Psalm 90:12

Sometimes it is so easy to forget that a time will come when we shall die and after that judgement awaits especially when we are young and full of life. However, both young and old die and so we do not need to wait till we hit our fifties before we start thinking of how to commit to God and His kingdom.

My maiden visit to the morgue was a big eye-opener for me. Seeing all the dead bodies, both young and old, got me to understand why the psalmist asked God to help us to number our days. As we number our days, we come to the realization that today we may be alive and tomorrow, we will be gone. Our lives are so short and we have only today to be right with God.

Numbering our days means every day must be considered as a day less to be on earth. A preacher once told his congregation on his birthday that “I am grateful to God for making the number of years He needs me to stay on earth one year less and thus making it faster for me to meet Him.” That is a man who has learnt to number his days on earth. He cannot wait to exit this earth to meet His maker. His mind is set on heaven and the reward that comes with life after resurrection so death frightens him not. Such a man commits to God and His kingdom greatly because His focus is not on worldly things.

Both young and old, we need to number our days. That way, we will not be caught unaware when death comes because we would be living to please God; committing to Him and His kingdom. Let us consider ourselves to be blessed with just today and stay focused. God bless you.
