Declare me innocent oh Lord!

Written by Mantebeah Elizabeth Matilda Abena.

“So declare me innocent oh Lord, for I have acted with integrity; I have trusted in the Lord without wavering…” (NIV) Psalm 26:1

Bible reading: Psalm 26

If David was still alive, I would have asked him a simple question “Did you know this generation that much”? As Christian pilgrims to heaven, our journey as many of us have already noticed is marred with difficulties and issues; some capable of breaking us down and letting go of our faith (John 15:18-27; Matthew 10:22; Mark 13:13). It is no surprise that the word of God warns us ahead of time through our Lord Jesus’s teachings and that of the early disciples. We will be saved if we stand firm to the end.

In spite of these encouragements and warnings, we sometimes find ourselves in situations where we simply cannot explain. I mean when you have done all a Christian is supposed to do and still suffer similar misfortunes as would people of the world. One is tempted to “ask why me God?” Like the Psalmist, we pray to God to vindicate us. We wonder if the Lord had abandoned us (Psalm 22) and for what course? What crime did we commit this time to pay so dearly a cost in life, simply because our problems have buried us in our sorrows?

Day in day out, we call on our maker to make a way but it feels He is so far away from us. Like little children, we may cry our hearts out to sleep until we wake up hoping to see a new day with our father’s smile. And when this doesn’t happen for a long time, we yearn in earnest for our father’s voice, calling out words of assurance – I am with you my child.

So, declare us innocent oh Lord. Let us hear your voice once more as we journey through this barren land. Hold us with your mighty hands and dazzle us through these moments of our lives. Let our bitter strides open hearts unto you and cause your abundant showers of blessing upon us.

I don’t know how you are seeing your difficult moments but I have embraced mine and turned it into my greatest asset. I am inspired with every moment in my life – good or bad. Each one is a message for me or someone else in my life. I never knew until I asked God to let me see people the way He sees them (inspired by the song "Give me your eyes" by Brandon Heath). You can do the same and find strength to lift His name up in difficult times (Psalm 26:12).

So, declare us innocent oh Lord. Give us a second chance to see things the way you do. Even when we are surrounded by a mighty “army”, our hearts will not be afraid for you watch over us. May His name be praised now and forever more. Amen!
