“Plant your seed in the morning and keep busy all afternoon, for you don’t know if profit will come from one activity or another – or maybe both” (NLT) Ecclesiastes 11:6

“Don’t be misled – you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.” (NLT) Galatians 6:7

In previous devotional (The Problem of life – Introduction) we learnt that life is generally problematic because of its inherent meaninglessness. In this devotional piece (and subsequent ones), we will learn the scriptural antidotes to the problems of life. The first solution is the Principle of Seed Sowing and Harvesting.

The Principle of Seed Sowing and Harvesting as a solution to the problem of life has both spiritual and physical implication. Reading from Ecclesiastes 11:1-6, the inspired writer Solomon enjoins his audience to literally sow their lives in expectation of a good harvest. Admittedly, life is tough and uncertainties abound. One may feel reluctant to initiate the sowing process because of these difficulties. However, no farmer worth his salt will wait only for the good times to sow. The inspired writer admonishes us accordingly:

“Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest” (NLT) Ecclesiastes 11:4.

The legendary investor Warren Buffet has made fortunes out of this attitude of sowing even in bad times. He sows in bad times when others are waiting for good times. He has said on several occasions that an economic recession is almost always followed by a boom in the economy and those who sow in tears in the recession are the ones who reap in joy in the boom. It seems like an unconventional thinking but the passage of time has vindicated him.

In the next devotional piece, we will look at the spiritual implication of the Principle of Seed Sowing and Harvesting from the text in Galatians. Until then go out to the fields and start sowing your life now.
